No Rain in CA: Judgment from God?

2013 marked California’s worst year for rainfall in recorded history. 2013 also marked the 40th year of abortion being legalized, and the year same-sex marriage was fully legalized in California. Are these major, historic events just a coincidence? Or are they a sign of judgment.

Although rarely heard today, in America’s recent past, both leaders in the church and civil government regularly called people to examine their ways and repent after tragedies like drought, disease, war, and other catastrophe’s once known as “Acts of God”, but today called “natural disasters”.

A remnant of this forgotten perspective can still be seen today if one looks through our legal codes and observes the term “Act of God” still mentioned. Law dictionaries define this term as “a legal term for events outside human control, such as sudden floods or other natural disasters, for which no one can be held responsible.”

This legal term originates from the past understanding that God is in control of nature – including droughts, as Amos 4:7 says, “I have withholden the rain from you… and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.”

Summarizing early America’s view of the Bible’s teaching on the source of droughts and other calamities, Pastor Jacob Cushing preached in a 1788 sermon, “And it may be noted, in general, that when public calamities were inflicted upon them, whether by the more immediate hand of heaven, as drought, pestilence, famine, and the like… it was always as a just punishment for their national iniquities; their idolatry, irreligion and abounding wickedness. And upon their repentance and reformation, these calamities were removed, and their prosperity restored.” (1)

Another example is found in Pastor Whiteford Smith’s response to an 1849 deadly disease outbreak in South Carolina, who called on people to “humble ourselves in the dust, to repent, to fast, and to pray, if peradventure God may turn away his anger from us, and in wrath remember mercy.” (2)

In the Bible — and many of these older sermons — we often see a focus on personal repentance, but we also see that when Daniel was told by God of an impending 70 year judgment, Daniel responded by confessing the sins of his whole nation, saying: “We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments” (Daniel 9:5).

Although we must exercise caution in presuming to know God’s specific purpose in a calamity, perhaps it is best to see it as an opportunity to examine ourselves, confess our known personal and national sins, and enquire of the Lord as David did in 2 Samuel 21:1, “Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD.”

Sad that the only public responses to the drought have been from the Roman Catholics and Muslims – who obviously missed the mark. This is the only article I’ve seen that addresses this issue biblically.
Thanks for posting it. Will definitely share.

I thought this might be why. Also just like the prophet praying for no rain. And I was thinking for not giving the farmers water because of a fish, and for non-straight marriage but the 40 years of being in the desert with abortion makes sense. It funny that pastors are praying for rain without repenting for our sins. Thanks for sharing.

The are saying it is not a drought but that it is Govt made? Politician Devin Nunes is saying.

      • randal johnny

Yes,God do it because great wickedness of the people of California. The whole nation must repent otherwise California will perish…….Repent…..repent..repent…..fasting and Prayer will help…….Repent…

  • DJ

So true. But such a rare message! Noone is preaching this!

    • noindoctrination

That’s because more than a few evangelicals have bought into the “God is love” mentality. I mean, a loving God wouldn’t make us suffer….. would he?

      • Huskystar

Do they love and follow God’s laws?

        • randal johnny

They ignore God law.hence people ignore it today like California. Will the state of California deserve God Punishment..the answer is yes. Sodom and Gomorrah is an example.God destroy it because of wickedness. Will it happen today…..the answer is yes.In God nothing is impossible. The only solution the whole nation must repent

      • randal johnny

Yes,God is love who do good but if people or nations is sinning God justice will be applied too. Jesus is very clear and honest saying repent otherwise you too will perish. That repentance is valid today because of great wickedness in California Citizen alike

  • Char

Definitely a judgement from God. But other states have allowed gay marriage but they are not suffering a drought. So I think this is a warning of what is coming to the whole United States. We ain’t seen nothing yet.

    • Josef

California is the largest agricultural producer of all fifty states by far, it is also more sexually libertine than any other state with the possible exception of New York.

    • Elijah Joseph

Amen, I am praying for no rain in California, until they, and I mean all of them repent!

    • randal johnny

You are right…..God judgement more to come unless they repent…….repent or perish like Sodom and Gomorrah.Remember the Great leader of this said,This nation will decline only when our moral and fear of God is gone. That prophetic words of our great leader is now reality…….

  • Char

Gee do you think god is trying to get our attention? And who said god is not in control?

  • Elijah Joseph

God’s Law is in force, Californians so libertine, I am praying that the drought continues until the Godless Liberals bow down before God and beg Him for life sustaining rain.

  • Beum

I am a Christian and there are many born again believers including pregnant women, kids, families in California. When a country disobeys God will reap the consequences just as when a country honours and obeys Him will reap the blessings. The US including California has turned its back on the LORD. Including all sins is divorce, which God calls adultery yet in the churches pastors don’t tell their members for fear of losing them and so called “chistians” divorce and remarry. As in the days of Noah will be like today “marrying and giving themselves in marriage” not God but people. an adulterous generation.
In Noah’s day only 8 people including him were saved from the flood.
So will be in these days. A lot of people think they are doing fine but no, Jesus was very explicit. Many will say in that day Lord Lord and He will answer I don’t know you. We have to walk humbly before Him, always loving and sharing the Good News, He is coming soon and He will sustain us. The bible says the love of many will wax cold and many will fall away before He comes. Stay in the tried and true course you only have this one chance…hold on to Jesus, pray, fast study the Word don’t just read it like a horoscope, worship Him, stay holy before Him…don’t believe the watered down gospel and vain philosophy…

  • randal johnny

The simple answer is No God no water. God is the only answer…….Sin is the main reasons why California has no rain…….If there will no rain…more fire and wild fire….Repent to God the sin of California…..Be humble otherwise..More to come like earthquakes ……….Solution seek God……Jesus Christ is the answer….Repent now…..

  • randal johnny

Such preaching will be apply today because of great sin and rebellion against God himself like abortion law,Guy and Lesbian law marriage, fornication, adultery, violence ungreatful and disrespect of our children to parents, crimes, drugs and wines.California look likes to me now like Sodom and Gomorrah. They must repent now and ask God to forgive them and heal the land before it is too late.America became so great because of God of their ancestor who come from Europe the Puritan who fear God..this day they ignore it, especially the leaders and law makers of California who instituted Gay and Lesbian marriage.Today Calamity is God Warning of More severe calamity to come.I call all Pastor to preac it once again like it for the nation sake.

  • randal johnny

    It much be preach now….
